Moon phases: observation and symbolism

A lunar phase describes how much of the Moon's sunlit side is visible from Earth. Phase names refer to a cycle; a Moon sign refers to a zodiac position.

A lunar phase describes how much of the Moon's sunlit side is visible from Earth. Phase names refer to a cycle; a Moon sign refers to a zodiac position.

Understand the method

New Moon, first quarter, full Moon and last quarter are reference points in the cycle. Their astronomical instants can be expressed in UTC and then displayed in a reader's local time.

Use the information carefully

A local calendar date can differ between countries even when the underlying instant is the same. If you use phases as a personal planning ritual, distinguish that ritual from a scientific claim about the best time to act.

Is a full Moon the same as a Moon sign?

No. Phase concerns illumination geometry. A tropical Moon sign concerns the sector of ecliptic longitude occupied by the Moon.
