Birth time is an input to a chart calculation. A rounded, uncertain or missing time should remain visible as uncertainty rather than being silently replaced with a precise-looking chart.

Understand the method

The horizon changes with time and place, so an ascendant needs both. The Moon can change signs during a civil day. Even the Sun can cross a tropical sign boundary during the date on a birth certificate.

Use the information carefully

Look for a documented time if one is available. Record whether it was exact, rounded or remembered. A calculator should explain what it can still calculate if the time is unknown.

Can noon replace an unknown birth time?

Noon can be an explicitly labeled reference instant for an estimate. It does not become the actual birth time and must not be used to present a certain ascendant.
